Like so many other models adapted from small SUVs, the history of the Simca 1000 Rallye 2 started with the very simple Simca 1000 and, later on from 1969, the Simca 1000 Spécial. Quite popular in the late '60s, French-made cars began to be coveted for competing in sport classes reserved for small-engined cars.

The Simca Poissy engine, commonly known as the Simca 1100 engine, was a four-cylinder Overhead valve engine developed by Simca for use in its superminis and economy cars, designed by the engineer Georges Martin (V12 Matra Sports engine designer). In spite of its common name, the engine actually predates the Simca 1100 model, and debuted in 1961 in the Simca 1000.

The Simca 1000 was a very popular model in France and enjoyed some success in selected export markets. In 1962 in the first year that the car was produced, 154,282 were made. During the 1960s and 1970s, the Simca 1000 was always near the top of the French automobile sales charts, and annual sales were normally above or around the 100,000 mark.
